What is irtec?
irtec is an independent accreditation, which validates the competence of technicians working to maintain the commercial vehicle, trailer and passenger carrying industries. An irtec licence tests both the knowledge and practical level of an individual.
irtec is a voluntary scheme, developed by the Institute of Road Transport Engineers, to raise standards and encourage industry self-regulation in road transport maintenance.

Industry Recognised Standard
The scheme is recognised as the industry benchmark of skills and knowledge and is supported by industry partners including the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI). Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) vehicle inspectors are irtec accredited, and Traffic Commissioners recognise irtec when assessing operator competence in public inquiries. Major fleet operators are also increasingly requesting irtec accreditation in maintenance contracts.

- How long does an irtec licence last?
All irtec licences are typically valid for five years, except for Large Electric Vehicle licence, which expires after three. Upon expiry, you can apply to renew your licence and resit the exams.
